‘The written word is the strongest most source of power in the entire universe.’ – Gary Halbert

Gary Halbert is often referred to as the ‘King of Copy’ the ‘Prince of Print’ and more often than not the ‘Greatest Copywriter of All Time’. So when Gary gives a valuable lesson on the importance of words and demonstrates a way in which makes them so damn powerful, well, you’d be a fool not to take his advice on board.

Gary used to begin his seminars by having his audience write out two letters, both of which would be written and addressed to your mother.

The only things you need to get started are two first class stamps, two plain envelopes, two blank sheets of paper, and have both envelopes addressed to your mother.

Then you handwrite the following letters.

Letter A

Dear Mom,

I’m very busy right now and I don’t have time to call so that’s why I’m writing you this letter.

You know, Mum, not only are you responsible for my very existence, you are also the nourishment that has made my life sparkle. I’m under a lot of stress right now and for some reason, I started thinking about you.

It has occurred to me that, maybe, I haven’t let you know recently how much I appreciate you and how much I love you.

I especially like remembering you on my 18th birthday when you gave me that gold Rolex watch.

Anyway, I’m going to make it a point to see you just as soon as I can.

Love,

John.

Next Gary would have his audience fold up the letter, put it in the first envelope, place a stamp on the envelope in the top right hand corner and then seal it.

Then he would have them do it all over again with a second letter.

Again the envelope is addressed to dear old mom, same as the first letter, but the second letter reads a little different to the first.

Letter B

Dear Mom,

If I weren’t such a long way from home, I probably wouldn’t have the guts to tell you this, but the following has been true ever since I was born.

You have made my life a living hell. Every person I know has a mother superior to you in every positive way imaginable. You are nothing more than a wrinkled up old $%*# and as far as I’m concerned the biggest &*%$£!

So just in case your low IQ keeps you from understanding what I’m trying to say, let me make it perfectly clear….

Please don’t call or write me. I have no inclination whatsoever to communicate with you ever again.

Reluctantly,

Your son, John.

P.S. Dad sucks too!

Now it doesn’t take a genius to work out that the impact of each letter sent would have a dramatic difference in the reaction of your mother, depending on which letter she opened.

What is the difference between the cost of the two envelopes? Practically none.

What is the difference in the energy it took you to address the two envelopes? Practically none.

What is the difference in the amount of postage you paid to mail the letters? Practically none.

What is the cost in the sheet of paper you wrote your letter on? Practically none.

What is the difference between the energy and time it took you to write that letter? Practically none.

One of those letters would have created a warm bonding feeling, and the other would have caused despair and a great deal of grief and unhappiness.

And what was the difference?

There was only one difference…

And that’s the words on a piece of paper.

There is nothing in the world that is stronger than the words on a piece of paper.

And with that, Sir Gary Halbert has just perfectly demonstrated how the written word is the strongest most powerful source in the entire universe.
